The focus of the Music for Seniors session is to support residents who are living with dementia or individuals who have been identified as having a specific need for additional therapeutic support. Music is a unique language that holds different, personal meanings for everyone and enables people to express themselves in their own way. Music therapy can also support a participant’s cognitive abilities, helping them remain active and engaged and lessening some of their more upsetting dementia-related symptoms.

A music therapy session can include playing and listening to songs connected to a particular memory in a participant’s life, creating music together on the spot, or simply talking. A key part of my work is collaborating with staff to create new approaches that increase positive interactions with participants through the use of music or other sensory stimuli. Staff are encouraged to take an active role by helping to select meaningful songs, facilitating group discussions about music and memories, joining in singing or playing instruments, and offering observations on what activities resonate with participants. By participating in these ways, staff are empowered to confidently support residents and reinforce the session’s positive outcomes.
